<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"> <a href="http://www.running-w-scissors.com/2012/04/house-build.html#.Vw7MReIrKUm">CHECK OUT ALL OUR HOUSE BUILDING POSTS!!</a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We hired out the drywall.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But before the crew could come we had a few custom projects to do ourselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">RUSTIC MANTLE BEAMS:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have two fireplaces and wanted rustic wood mantles.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We sourced beams, and decided we didn't want bolts visible on the front, so we had to mount them to the framing before drywall.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This creates a floating look to the rustic mantle beam.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4K-LSXIXQcs/VzS897i7WeI/AAAAAAAARg8/DH2MpLJZBgodeteGnI4VXy6YXhYtfidpwCLcB/s1600/rusticmantlebeamrock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4K-LSXIXQcs/VzS897i7WeI/AAAAAAAARg8/DH2MpLJZBgodeteGnI4VXy6YXhYtfidpwCLcB/s1600/rusticmantlebeamrock.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We'd told the framers our plan for the heavy beams, which weighed 100 lb, and they framed above the fireplaces accordingly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To mount each beam took two people.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got behind and straddled the fireplace while my husband stood in front holding the beam level.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Predrill 2x6 mounting framing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We positioned holes in the framing across the area the beam would end up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Drill and Mount Beam</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
From behind, I drilled a pilot hole with an auger drill bit into the beam, an inch or two less than the screw.<br />Then quickly inserted a long hex screw with washer and tightened it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once we got two in the beam and it was level, it was easier to secure the others.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Aey3T2SjdBg/VzS89yq5SqI/AAAAAAAARg4/QWyeIVwe02gxlPvYPycTraYD_qhblcFfACLcB/s1600/rusticmantlebeam2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Aey3T2SjdBg/VzS89yq5SqI/AAAAAAAARg4/QWyeIVwe02gxlPvYPycTraYD_qhblcFfACLcB/s640/rusticmantlebeam2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The basement fireplace was having a rock surround, so we actually bumped it out another 1.5" with a 2x8 backer. This way 2" of the beam wouldn't be covered and embedded in the rock and we'd get a deeper mantle.<span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L2kq-sa7lsg/VzS89_iwDjI/AAAAAAAARg0/yqfdgYPxqX4Jc-EKBO9rccc9ZQeWgYQ_ACLcB/s1600/rusticmantlebeam3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-L2kq-sa7lsg/VzS89_iwDjI/AAAAAAAARg0/yqfdgYPxqX4Jc-EKBO9rccc9ZQeWgYQ_ACLcB/s640/rusticmantlebeam3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Info for the rock we used<a href="http://www.running-w-scissors.com/2015/08/building-house-exterior-stone-and-siding.html#.Vw647eIrKUk"> here:</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The main floor was the same process.<span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7UWymGAjtMY/VzS89fbBMmI/AAAAAAAARgw/yESXqNkcCRA3wK9xMYIt_0ZuCOr5Z82aACLcB/s1600/rusticmantlebeam.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="564" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7UWymGAjtMY/VzS89fbBMmI/AAAAAAAARgw/yESXqNkcCRA3wK9xMYIt_0ZuCOr5Z82aACLcB/s640/rusticmantlebeam.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">PLAYROOM UNDER THE STAIRS</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The other detail was adding an arch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We chose to use the space underneath the basement stairs as a playroom or hut.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was framed for a full sized door, so Rhett and I framed the opening lower and used an <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/13-in-Prefabricated-Framing-Arch-Kit-UAK13/203621239">arch kit</a> from Home Depot for $20.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was really easy to install.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LfCOihJnUCc/VzS8-S-aOzI/AAAAAAAARhI/byhTZZQ3hLYNODG5vmz0wfE4FYHkegrNQCLcB/s1600/understairsplayhouse2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LfCOihJnUCc/VzS8-S-aOzI/AAAAAAAARhI/byhTZZQ3hLYNODG5vmz0wfE4FYHkegrNQCLcB/s640/understairsplayhouse2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then when drywall went up, it was a cute arched doorway.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kids love this little room just for them.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fnGJN2w6q5M/VzS8-GdO_0I/AAAAAAAARhE/CSchAIOrsdMJ7dI0oL568Z04B86Sx11HQCLcB/s1600/understairsplayhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="414" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fnGJN2w6q5M/VzS8-GdO_0I/AAAAAAAARhE/CSchAIOrsdMJ7dI0oL568Z04B86Sx11HQCLcB/s640/understairsplayhouse.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">SMOOTH DRYWALL TEXTURE</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the master bedroom, I had planned an accent wall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our mud/ texture crew did one wall with a smooth texture, and the rest of the house had a medium scrape texture. The scrape texture kind of reminds me of the Venetian plaster look.<span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i6IJn8RFK5k/VzS89_5iTHI/AAAAAAAARhA/6hKvq1YUpPkU4nzxVWiZht7gbZHp49STgCLcB/s1600/smoothdrywalltexture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i6IJn8RFK5k/VzS89_5iTHI/AAAAAAAARhA/6hKvq1YUpPkU4nzxVWiZht7gbZHp49STgCLcB/s1600/smoothdrywalltexture.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm glad I had planned enough to have the smooth texture, because in projects down the road it made it a lot easier. I actually wished I'd had them do smooth in our entryway that I was putting up wallpaper for as well.</div>

This project started before we ever broke ground on our house build.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My mom helped me create a leaded glass window for the master bathroom to go over a tub.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Because it was an exterior window, it was installed by the framers and endured the entire building process.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I installed all the finish carpentry or millwork around windows and doorways, and we hired painters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you look closely at the window, there are imperfections.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is far from perfect.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eY97U3CL0ys/VyECbFKCwOI/AAAAAAAARec/nKHl6wUHJc0SEN7HxsyOT5k6LsVlxR1NACLcB/s1600/stainedglass4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="512" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eY97U3CL0ys/VyECbFKCwOI/AAAAAAAARec/nKHl6wUHJc0SEN7HxsyOT5k6LsVlxR1NACLcB/s640/stainedglass4.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But that's like of like life. Up close on a day to day basis there's a lot of failure, especially as a parent.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But if you stand back and look at your life as a whole, it's beautiful and those imperfections can't be noticed, and actually contribute to the greater whole.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-knOc23rGqDc/VyECa_e7y1I/AAAAAAAAReY/faQSSWyUqPQtdpNgNEnZXoIBHlx3G3aOwCLcB/s1600/stainedglass3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-knOc23rGqDc/VyECa_e7y1I/AAAAAAAAReY/faQSSWyUqPQtdpNgNEnZXoIBHlx3G3aOwCLcB/s640/stainedglass3.jpg" width="636" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was the only leaded glass or stained glass window that had to be completed during construction.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have a ton more I need to do, but that will come in the months ahead. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When my husband and I designed our house, we omitted having a formal office.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In our rental we dedicated our smallest bedroom as an office but found we never used it unless we were fetching something we printed. Most of our "office" time was spent using lap tops on our couch in our main living area.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
So we decided our habits probably wouldn't change, and I designed a desk on one side of our main floor family room to serve as the every day office area. Seating for the desk was a challenge. This wall is also the main traffic area for our open floor plan...so I decided rolling stools would be the best option.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When no one is at the desk, the stools can easily roll under and out of the way.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2CLW9GL3Oeo/VxVa6S0RKWI/AAAAAAAARcU/_ZjBbj-7vsweC0c1pOLE721ggfYw5zdOwCLcB/s1600/stool3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2CLW9GL3Oeo/VxVa6S0RKWI/AAAAAAAARcU/_ZjBbj-7vsweC0c1pOLE721ggfYw5zdOwCLcB/s640/stool3.jpg" width="438" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought two medical exam stools. I went with Brewer exam stools that have a metal base and cushioned seat and adjust up and down by spinning. I wanted a vintage industrial look but needed casters and durability.Buying them new is actually pricey, but I found one on craigslist and the other on ebay. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img src="http://www.modomed.com/cdocs/MODO/images/BM23051.1.jpeg" style="text-align: left;" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The chrome and medical vinyl felt like a doctor's office so I gave the metal base a coat of spray paint primer, followed by 2 thin coats of Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint to match the desk hardware.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To refinish the upholstery, I decided to go with <a href="https://www.leatherhidestore.com/leather-for-upholstery">upholstery leather</a> for a nicer approach than the standard vinyl. I've done a few other furniture projects with vinyl and it just doesn't last. So if you have a piece that gets a lot of traffic, or kids will touch it at all, if you can swing leather, go for upholstery leather fabric. I don't have access to leather locally, and I've ordered from <a href="https://www.leatherhidestore.com/">The Leather Hide Store</a> before and got a range of samples again for this project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">After looking at my samples, I decided to go with </span><a href="https://www.leatherhidestore.com/catalogsearch/result/?order=relevance&dir=desc&q=metallic" style="text-align: left;">Metallic Blue upholstery leather</a><span style="text-align: left;">. Stools are a nice small project so you can often find </span><a href="https://www.leatherhidestore.com/leather-remnants-leather-pieces.html" style="text-align: left;">upholstery leather remnants</a><span style="text-align: left;"> rather than a full hide.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://www.leatherhidestore.com/leather-fabric-reupholstery-guide">Leather Hide Store also has a guide to know how much leather you need for any project.</a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">My husband and I made the counter for the desk from sheet metal. I torched it to bring out the varying colors in the steel, and felt the metallic blue upholstery leather compliments the metal desk top. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RwsLD1iAzWE/VxVa6n5Zc3I/AAAAAAAARcY/jUT-Gg1QXo0KEOOPb2ZvsAXdtzZH1t8wgCLcB/s1600/stool4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="446" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RwsLD1iAzWE/VxVa6n5Zc3I/AAAAAAAARcY/jUT-Gg1QXo0KEOOPb2ZvsAXdtzZH1t8wgCLcB/s640/stool4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our desk has room for two people to work, so ordering two stools meant they were originally mis-matched and looked out of place.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I LOVE the new matching metallic leather seats and it pulled this area of our house together with the industrial vibe of the metals and old schoolhouse design of the quarter-sawn oak desk.</div>

<u><span style="font-size: large;">1. CUT OUT LEATHER</span></u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since I was re-upholstering, I took off the vinyl original and used a straight razor to unpick it to use as a pattern. To trace the circle and rectangle for the sides, I used a regular pen and wrote on the wrong or unfinished side of the upholstery leather.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A basic round stool will have a circle for the top, and the strip for the sides.<span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div>

<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">2. SEW STOOL COVER</span></u></b></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>FIRST SOME TIPS FOR SEWING LEATHER:</b><br />
<blockquote>
<i>To sew upholstery leather, you need a heavy duty sewing machine.</i><br />
I have a basic Brother plastic home machine I bought off amazon, and there's no way that could sew leather....I have tried and it was a major fail.<br />
I sewed this upholstery leather with an industrial 3/4 hp motor sewing machine. Tons of power and it sewed like the leather was quilting cotton.<br />
<i>Use a leather needle.</i><i>You can't pin leather, so you can use fancy quilting clips, or cheap office binder clips. </i></blockquote>
</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<blockquote>
<i>Depending on your machine, a leather presser foot and walking foot may help, industrial don't have walking function. </i><span style="text-align: left;"> </span></blockquote>
</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: center;">Place your circle piece finished side up and the strip right side down. Leave an inch or two free and sew around the circle, leaving a 4" gap. This will create an opening with two flaps of the strip piece.</span> </blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iCLyK8LqtSM/VxVo-9TlHHI/AAAAAAAARc8/53Rh0GhmKVM61VxXhb57UShlU7OkPQiIgCLcB/s1600/stool8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="303" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iCLyK8LqtSM/VxVo-9TlHHI/AAAAAAAARc8/53Rh0GhmKVM61VxXhb57UShlU7OkPQiIgCLcB/s400/stool8.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To create the side seam, I snip the two seam allowances where they will butt into each other and meet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then line them up and sew along the meeting edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The photo below shows this section isn't sewn to the circle until the arrow.<span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0AeuS1RK66c/VxVo_SXHf8I/AAAAAAAARc4/ljObFZmLXfc8O6aLFzBuqvNPRbuGBA4oQCLcB/s1600/stool9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0AeuS1RK66c/VxVo_SXHf8I/AAAAAAAARc4/ljObFZmLXfc8O6aLFzBuqvNPRbuGBA4oQCLcB/s400/stool9.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Trim any excess from your side seam, use a hammer to flatten seam open (since you can't iron leather) and sew the final 4" of curve to attach the side to the circle (the area between arrows below).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LHsEcpedKho/VxVo-ZCgZwI/AAAAAAAARcs/kGrjnICA_8gJ72h_pwPetAJBZ9nQQgOewCLcB/s1600/stool10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LHsEcpedKho/VxVo-ZCgZwI/AAAAAAAARcs/kGrjnICA_8gJ72h_pwPetAJBZ9nQQgOewCLcB/s400/stool10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><u><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">3. STAPLE TO STOOL SEAT</span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Both my stools had a wood circle base. I fit the new leather cover over the foam cushion, and stapled it to the underside of the wood. Start anywhere, then next put a staple directly across from that, stretching the leather tight. Then go the opposite direction, stapling 4 corners basically, then it should be tacked on with equal distribution and smooth even edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used T50 1/4" tall staples.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Screw the stool seat back on the base and you're done!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<a href="http://www.running-w-scissors.com/2012/04/house-build.html#.Vw7MReIrKUm"><span style="font-size: large;">CHECK OUT ALL OUR POSTS RELATED TO BUILDING OUR HOUSE HERE!</span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our home has a double deck of sorts.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The main floor has a back deck, which is on top of the walk out basement patio area.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This basement walk out patio needed exterior finishing, but for the most part won't be seen or exposed to the elements....so I of course wanted to do something unique.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bYg4itCxuVU/Vw7oWxx-c4I/AAAAAAAARas/7MUuViKhRFAayFXbS695_ln8WKQRimYBACLcB/s1600/steel1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bYg4itCxuVU/Vw7oWxx-c4I/AAAAAAAARas/7MUuViKhRFAayFXbS695_ln8WKQRimYBACLcB/s1600/steel1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also wanted to save money.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our home has cement Hardie Board siding, which was expensive as far as exterior options go, so I got the idea of finishing the 40' basement wall with sheet metal.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This space will eventually be an outdoor game room, so I thought it would be funky to have metal, making it feel like a room rather than a porch. Sheet metal was also a durable and inexpensive option.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I found one post of a home also built in Utah <a href="http://baubilt.com/?p=922">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using it as a guide, I started figuring out how to install my own steel siding.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
PREP:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The sub-contractor we hired for the concrete siding had installed house wrap and sealed around the windows.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OiIpOA2jv8k/Vw7oYT3WX-I/AAAAAAAARbE/mjPQSKbl6DcmRWU_qIs8O8iyWP7BWYKuACLcB/s1600/steel2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OiIpOA2jv8k/Vw7oYT3WX-I/AAAAAAAARbE/mjPQSKbl6DcmRWU_qIs8O8iyWP7BWYKuACLcB/s400/steel2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">We installed aluminum bottom track to help any moisture drain away rather than wick up the wall, with another layer of the window seal along the floor. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rWihTHfov08/Vw7oYg3MSxI/AAAAAAAARbI/7PFTLw58WVUM9mrFXPKOnzu5p4xcJyCtQCLcB/s1600/steel3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rWihTHfov08/Vw7oYg3MSxI/AAAAAAAARbI/7PFTLw58WVUM9mrFXPKOnzu5p4xcJyCtQCLcB/s400/steel3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">SHEET METAL:</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gABAfrrY4jQ/Vw7oY-aIw0I/AAAAAAAARbQ/9FUSs1gj-6oYz1e37gaMnqOLEoUInsqRQCLcB/s1600/steel4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gABAfrrY4jQ/Vw7oY-aIw0I/AAAAAAAARbQ/9FUSs1gj-6oYz1e37gaMnqOLEoUInsqRQCLcB/s640/steel4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After calculating the required metal, I purchased all our sheet metal locally from <a href="http://www.metalmart.biz/">Metalmart</a> in Lehi, Utah.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">4x10' sheets of 20 gauge cold rolled steel</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I liked the silver metal look, but my husband hated that idea. So we compromised on a rusted, metal look. So after purchasing our sheet metal, I cut it in half, making 2' tall x 10' long sheets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">ACID WASHING STEEL:</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wanted to corrode the raw steel before I installed it, so each piece had a unique pattern.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nRglyfwWbig/Vw7oYyHwwXI/AAAAAAAARbY/8JyNky2Ob_o1VfLkV6SsjRP6uRCmyLCvgCLcB/s1600/steel6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nRglyfwWbig/Vw7oYyHwwXI/AAAAAAAARbY/8JyNky2Ob_o1VfLkV6SsjRP6uRCmyLCvgCLcB/s400/steel6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used different methods with muriatic acid, white vinegar, and water.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There wasn't a specific method, spray acids on alone, some with water too, some just water.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CTnRO1PsLro/Vw7oY2Kkf9I/AAAAAAAARbU/eEu8MBq7uE4UVO-uHLXU75aMtOhk03r0gCLcB/s1600/steel5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CTnRO1PsLro/Vw7oY2Kkf9I/AAAAAAAARbU/eEu8MBq7uE4UVO-uHLXU75aMtOhk03r0gCLcB/s1600/steel5.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The natural rust of the steel is obviously in the red-brown realm, but I really loved the black/ blues that came out initially. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">METAL SIDING INSTALL:</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The process was pretty simple. I planned to install from the bottom left to finish in the upper right. Each panel was 2 feet tall, and I cut the width as I went to create a random look. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To attach them to the wall, I screwed them to the sheathing using raw steel screws that have a washer built in. They are more expensive, but really cool if you are into screws. I've had 3 other sub-contractors comment on the cool screws, pretty funny.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.mcfeelys.com/10-x-1-wood-screws-unplated-steel-round-washer-head-combo-drive-qty-1000-6txt6.html">McFeely's #10 1-inch washer-head screws</a></span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not only do you save time not needing a washer, but these screws are also raw steel and will rust, so you don't end up with a rusted metal wall and bright silver screws.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><u>TIPS ON CUTTING SHEET METAL:</u></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I went through a few different methods on cutting the sheet metal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At first I considered a torch, but it wasn't easy to transport or get a straight cut.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I got the angle grinder with 7" metal pads and they'd be gone in a 5 ft cut.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
SO I finally figured out and stuck with a metal blade on a circular saw. Make sure you have a saw with a cord, batteries will die really quickly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Concord-Blades-MCB0725T060HP-Ferrous-Cutting/dp/B00LFCLUWY?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage">this blade from amazon</a> and it worked great through the whole project and many cuts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Obviously any time you're cutting, wear ear and eye protection, unlike sawdust, it sends sparks and metal fragments. I have to admit I felt pretty cool cutting with the spray of sparks behind me. Metal is scarier, but more fun to cut than metal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j7VxeptaiD0/Vw7oZW9eUsI/AAAAAAAARbg/pt9YN5vI3e811XKy_3R5C-yM4DcVsRerwCLcB/s1600/steel8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="494" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j7VxeptaiD0/Vw7oZW9eUsI/AAAAAAAARbg/pt9YN5vI3e811XKy_3R5C-yM4DcVsRerwCLcB/s640/steel8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Before installing, I pre-drilled holes 6" apart, with 1/2" from the metal edge. Make sure to use drill bits manufactured to drill through metal and you save time if you make a template.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2SnkNsm80tc/Vw7oZS979sI/AAAAAAAARbk/UsC65d--CzMMaytqGiheQJsn7W7ZMVdDgCLcB/s1600/steel9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2SnkNsm80tc/Vw7oZS979sI/AAAAAAAARbk/UsC65d--CzMMaytqGiheQJsn7W7ZMVdDgCLcB/s400/steel9.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I put my first chunk of sheet metal on, and only screwed the left and bottom edges.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then when I added the next piece, I overlapped it 4" side to side, and the next row .overlapped 2" down</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w35WfJRLDVE/Vw7oXD6qYpI/AAAAAAAARaw/PfGcqLPE0PwJpeH4C46up_UPy1en6gI_QCLcB/s1600/steel10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="352" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w35WfJRLDVE/Vw7oXD6qYpI/AAAAAAAARaw/PfGcqLPE0PwJpeH4C46up_UPy1en6gI_QCLcB/s400/steel10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As the wall comes along, you work your way up and right.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can see below I would chalk a line after using a level to overlap vertically 2 inches on the top of each row.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hCY1iQoI0Og/Vw7oW6xSdtI/AAAAAAAARa0/8xsK4ijm70oD8iM0Z6K5-K8brU0uhP19wCLcB/s1600/steel11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hCY1iQoI0Og/Vw7oW6xSdtI/AAAAAAAARa0/8xsK4ijm70oD8iM0Z6K5-K8brU0uhP19wCLcB/s1600/steel11.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of course you will have interferences like windows you need to cut around.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I measured and cut the piece, then installed it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To allow wiring for exterior plugs, I just drilled a large pre-measured hole in the sheet metal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pKIQchdi__I/Vw7oXpl6xPI/AAAAAAAARa8/SejFnzPxO246GkKy49ymD1W5GrXN0hipgCLcB/s1600/steel12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pKIQchdi__I/Vw7oXpl6xPI/AAAAAAAARa8/SejFnzPxO246GkKy49ymD1W5GrXN0hipgCLcB/s400/steel12.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I got to the windows, I knew I would install the window trim later, and therefore wanted the metal flat, not a screw head poking up. So on the metal edges bordering windows, I used the framing nail gun to attach it to the house.<span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o6Z8RC1fDc4/Vw7oXqJ4QUI/AAAAAAAARa4/oROrEdvjJj0uiZkKVNRgFoGfdWHf1shlwCLcB/s1600/steel13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="436" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-o6Z8RC1fDc4/Vw7oXqJ4QUI/AAAAAAAARa4/oROrEdvjJj0uiZkKVNRgFoGfdWHf1shlwCLcB/s640/steel13.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As it went, I selected the different sheets of corrosion to add variety in the overall wall.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I loved the way it turned out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The siding contractor that did all the regular siding begged me to just let him install the same siding down on the basement as the rest of the house. I told him I was doing my own siding down there with metal and he just didn't get it. After a few different conversations, his final plea was: "Please just let us do the Hardie Board down there, you have this beautiful house and you're just going to ruin it."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I told him I was doing what I wanted, and a few months later he came by to check it out and saw the metal and oohed and aahed, and ate his words saying it looked really cool and a lot better than how I originally explained it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That was a good moment in the house build.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YAYv2UT09ck/Vw7oYFYRttI/AAAAAAAARbA/zOiRkvMgIM8pEXjxkslRejKsK9NvePqUQCLcB/s1600/steel14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YAYv2UT09ck/Vw7oYFYRttI/AAAAAAAARbA/zOiRkvMgIM8pEXjxkslRejKsK9NvePqUQCLcB/s640/steel14.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Building our house ourselves meant our kids were on site...a lot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But cutting the sheet metal was too dangerous, so I mostly worked on this project at night after they were in bed and my husband was home. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-m0DtQd2Q_Ss/Vw7zK7pcc4I/AAAAAAAARb0/yWGJf_8skQk5OchvHIUwPLjmEJbGb6fOQCLcB/s1600/steel17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-m0DtQd2Q_Ss/Vw7zK7pcc4I/AAAAAAAARb0/yWGJf_8skQk5OchvHIUwPLjmEJbGb6fOQCLcB/s1600/steel17.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The look obviously isn't for every home or every style, but I am so excited about my metal siding.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Other than my husband helping me haul the sheets of metal, I completed this project entirely on my own. It got tricky when it was above my head on a ladder, but if an out of shape mom can do it, anyone can!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KsMWFu4rcn0/Vw7oYUS-iJI/AAAAAAAARbM/KE5xAYyz9iICwWrSksLqtkq2MOY2KuQPACLcB/s1600/steel15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KsMWFu4rcn0/Vw7oYUS-iJI/AAAAAAAARbM/KE5xAYyz9iICwWrSksLqtkq2MOY2KuQPACLcB/s640/steel15.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am so excited for my final vision of this space! This metal wall is just the beginning.</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.running-w-scissors.com/2012/04/house-build.html#.Vw7K4-IrKUl">MORE HOUSE BUILDING POSTS HERE!</a></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">This project was solely my husband, and I think the first project I've ever posted that I wasn't involved in. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">_______________________________________________________________________________</span></div>
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Window wells were an area neither my husband and I hadn't thought too much about.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then when it came time to make decisions, we were shocked at how expensive they were.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Over $100 for the basic aluminum curved ones, to almost $1K for rock look walls.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We considered many options from making our own geode embedded concrete walls to the fancy faux rock surrounds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7Xb5jvH21Ug/Vw7GduMTCKI/AAAAAAAARaY/Q7vwFnUqlvY6g9-PuxXLcDXZzuRi-YMVACLcB/s1600/windowwell7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7Xb5jvH21Ug/Vw7GduMTCKI/AAAAAAAARaY/Q7vwFnUqlvY6g9-PuxXLcDXZzuRi-YMVACLcB/s640/windowwell7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our basement bedrooms are deep enough the majority of the window will be a view of the window well, so we wanted to come up with an affordable solution that would look somewhat appealing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
AND we had to have an escape element to meet code for basement bedrooms. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So we decided on making our own window wells with affordable railroad ties.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We got our ties for about $10 each.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vXVetnsDoEE/Vw7GcDa5uiI/AAAAAAAARaA/ZGLE2AmTXWcNxO6caFMP1ex-1Lt0Bm7HgCLcB/s1600/windowwell2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vXVetnsDoEE/Vw7GcDa5uiI/AAAAAAAARaA/ZGLE2AmTXWcNxO6caFMP1ex-1Lt0Bm7HgCLcB/s320/windowwell2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After digging out around the foundation, layers of landscaping fabric went down, along with at least 2' of gravel for adequate drainage. The final gravel level was 6" lower than the concrete edge of the window opening.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TQN6Aj9DAnY/Vw7GcUIArnI/AAAAAAAARaE/Jq93Ot9yFmQ0Ma4r88VdCQFMmNyORFZ5QCLcB/s1600/windowwell1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TQN6Aj9DAnY/Vw7GcUIArnI/AAAAAAAARaE/Jq93Ot9yFmQ0Ma4r88VdCQFMmNyORFZ5QCLcB/s320/windowwell1.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xel_r5QyRE0/Vw7GdAoNo8I/AAAAAAAARaM/TfZgC9FwotQuUe2eYD-uit-0D14x2IRBQCLcB/s1600/windowwell4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xel_r5QyRE0/Vw7GdAoNo8I/AAAAAAAARaM/TfZgC9FwotQuUe2eYD-uit-0D14x2IRBQCLcB/s320/windowwell4.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxlnMyUehVE/Vw7GczvKnfI/AAAAAAAARaI/2cidjDcqZ9sljkuRC584oQd3ARuL-_RZgCLcB/s1600/windowwell3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxlnMyUehVE/Vw7GczvKnfI/AAAAAAAARaI/2cidjDcqZ9sljkuRC584oQd3ARuL-_RZgCLcB/s320/windowwell3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had access to a small loader which made the gravel step easier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then the railroad ties were cut to length.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
THIS WAS THE WORST PART.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Using a chain saw, cutting the timbers varied so much from timber to timber.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The oil they are manufactured with to fireproof for railroad use made some harder than oak to cut.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My husband spent half the time sharpening the chain saw blades, sometimes only 1 cut between sharpenings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To anchor the timbers, Rhett drilled holes vertically every 2 timbers with an 18" auger drill bit using a hammer drill. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then pounded rebar through the ties into the ground. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Each 2 timbers made a "step" and the next 2 timbers were about 4-6" away, so the windo well sides were stairs for escape purposes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once the window well was complete, we wrapped it as best we could in tar paper, (to prevent water/mud from coming through the cracks) then pushed the dirt back up to support it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The top rows were bolted down with washers to lower levels for a more pleasing look, and to avoid rebar poking out of holes on the top layer.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f4suP17Bbnk/Vw7GdCsFjBI/AAAAAAAARaQ/TIGdCZ4-EO06xZOd8_fXQ_PtQMIkSMiZgCLcB/s1600/windowwell5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="436" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f4suP17Bbnk/Vw7GdCsFjBI/AAAAAAAARaQ/TIGdCZ4-EO06xZOd8_fXQ_PtQMIkSMiZgCLcB/s640/windowwell5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think the final look is unique and fits the vibe of other timber and rustic elements in our home.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once the ground on top is landscaped, floor cover plants will cascade down in to further enhance the view from the basement bedrooms.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lJVkdAJrH_w/Vw7GdfqvmtI/AAAAAAAARac/QQAq1LUrB_QEBUWGTAqdzlVdvb37Z9TdwCLcB/s1600/windowwell6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lJVkdAJrH_w/Vw7GdfqvmtI/AAAAAAAARac/QQAq1LUrB_QEBUWGTAqdzlVdvb37Z9TdwCLcB/s640/windowwell6.jpg" width="536" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
As for recommending it, this option was a ton of hot, dirty, exhausting work.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was my husband's facebook post discouraging anyone from considering it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm glad <strike>we</strike> he did it however, just know it was not a quick, easy project.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fT62zG9bpU4/Vw6tsqN2joI/AAAAAAAARZc/IvSi6A4jd9sF1nhhUOupWMBBdx26FZyKgCLcB/s1600/gable1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fT62zG9bpU4/Vw6tsqN2joI/AAAAAAAARZc/IvSi6A4jd9sF1nhhUOupWMBBdx26FZyKgCLcB/s1600/gable1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The architecture of our home has a dominant main gable. It's the center of the home, and has a round window below. I had always wanted a detail of some kind to add character. You can see below without anything, the round window seems really low and it could use a top to ground it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-35ffX_awi0A/Vw6tpEswIrI/AAAAAAAARZQ/cXzq1lxyeMIRsFf7QYIdOHqC_Y6vQb2OACLcB/s1600/web9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-35ffX_awi0A/Vw6tpEswIrI/AAAAAAAARZQ/cXzq1lxyeMIRsFf7QYIdOHqC_Y6vQb2OACLcB/s1600/web9.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But looking for options proved to be an expensive route.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The gable would have to be custom to get what we want and cost more than our budget allowed, so I figured we'd do it ourselves. I climbed up there to figure out the overall height I wanted from the peak of the roof. I also knew our roof was 6/12 pitch (meaning every 12 ft the roof goes up 6 ft).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E2atZtcBXR4/Vw6ttQ0oy3I/AAAAAAAARZs/_MfIbcHyBwgUyJpkUWY_lQ0P-WZvfHiZgCLcB/s1600/gabletrim.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="161" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E2atZtcBXR4/Vw6ttQ0oy3I/AAAAAAAARZs/_MfIbcHyBwgUyJpkUWY_lQ0P-WZvfHiZgCLcB/s640/gabletrim.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1Y6Nq4MBeXY/Vw6tshCOPzI/AAAAAAAARZY/zpO-avyW6pIBeQl7c9MLpHqzs7kxp64_ACLcB/s1600/gable2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1Y6Nq4MBeXY/Vw6tshCOPzI/AAAAAAAARZY/zpO-avyW6pIBeQl7c9MLpHqzs7kxp64_ACLcB/s1600/gable2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I mapped out the design on thick pattern paper. This helped me stand back and see how I wanted the curved arms on the diagonal. I started out coming 45 degrees from the intersection, but realized the curve needed to go more vertical and end closer to the middle.<span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7uUwUr1wNmw/Vw6ttIU7sVI/AAAAAAAARZo/FKTanMHzkeQ3PDrQVhADtWoPSpMUGETOACLcB/s1600/gable3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="416" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7uUwUr1wNmw/Vw6ttIU7sVI/AAAAAAAARZo/FKTanMHzkeQ3PDrQVhADtWoPSpMUGETOACLcB/s640/gable3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I climbed up and taped up my design on the actual house to make sure I liked the angle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
TO CONSTRUCT:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The center vertical beam is a rough cut 4x6.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The base was a 16' 2x4.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Curved arms cut from rough cut 2x12</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only piece that is flush against the house is the vertical center, the base was notched out to hold the 16' base in front. The base and arms are flush with the front, making a 2" gap behind them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A NOTE ON ROUGH CUT LUMBER: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rough cut is a preliminary cut, and is obviously rough showing saw markings, which is ideal for the rustic or weathered look. It's actual measurements, so a rough cut 2x 4 is 2" thick and 4" wide, unlike dimensional lumber off the shelf which is 1.5" thick and 3.5" wide. You can't find rough cut lumber at big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes, you usually need to find an actual lumber mill.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you're in Utah, my favorite <a href="http://www.fishlakesawmill.com/">Fishlake Lumber</a> in Beaver, Utah.</div>
They cut to order, and have awesome prices.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our gable beam was around $60.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XYOMeCOtL1I/Vw6ttO2j_9I/AAAAAAAARZk/wCgQtHKzjM0jL3p2r-C92VbCfqo7igJ0wCLcB/s1600/gable4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XYOMeCOtL1I/Vw6ttO2j_9I/AAAAAAAARZk/wCgQtHKzjM0jL3p2r-C92VbCfqo7igJ0wCLcB/s1600/gable4.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
TO INSTALL:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I don't have any photos of the install, as we were all involved.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We chose to install the lag screws from inside the house, so the exterior didn't show bolt heads and washers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All the pieces were cut, and finished while on the ground.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used <a href="http://www.amazon.com/THOMPSONS-WATERSEAL-042841-16-Acorn-Transparent/dp/B00KIZVQPU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460581664&sr=8-1&keywords=thompsons+water+seal+acorn+brown">Thompsons water seal stain, semi-transparent, in Acorn Brown</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In one step you stain and seal the wood, which will be nice for future coats where I'll be on the roof.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81jkTFsKnuL._SL1500_.jpg" height="400" width="273" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To install, we pre-drilled through the exterior of the house into the attic space.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My husband was on the inside, and then pre-drilled into 4x6 center post while my huge little brother and I held it up from the outside.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My husband then cranked lug screws into the post from inside the house.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After the first one, we didn't need to hold the weight, but just supported it until 4 screws were holding it to the house.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To secure the long ends of the base, we repeated the process, using a 18" long drill bit to pre-drill through the beam, directly through the house. Then my husband fed the next lag screw out, and cranked it into the wood. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lastly, the small curved arms were also attached individually and screwed through the attic and into the back of each piece, one toward the base, and another at the roof line.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Installing was kind of a beast.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Working through the attic wall was a pain, in addition to being on the roof with the incline and height of the gable.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love the finished look, and think it adds a lot to the overall style we're heading with the exterior.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We plan to later add rustic shutters, and the posts will be trimmed out with rough cut lumber as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I guess I'd describe our goal as rustic cottage for the home and future landscaping.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So, I've been boxing for one year, and I just had my first fight! I didn't get the win, which surprised my trainer and myself, since my opponent bled all over the ring, and I came away without a dent. Either way, though, I did a beautiful job, and I had something great to wear too!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last summer we started building our home. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the info on the choices we made for the exterior.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, my husband Rhett was actually in charge of the exterior choices. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our goal was kind of a rustic cottage feel.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q4PGQVr-oV4/VdXvdVqm6oI/AAAAAAAARPE/A-SBAZo8Eb0/s1600/exterior2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q4PGQVr-oV4/VdXvdVqm6oI/AAAAAAAARPE/A-SBAZo8Eb0/s640/exterior2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since our architecture was somewhat craftsman with the big gable, we decided to use siding for the majority of the home.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rhett also wanted to use rock on the facade of the house.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">WINDOWS</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To add some character and kind of a older home feel, we went with grid-paneled windows.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The round attic window is just a 42" diameter plain window.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">SIDING</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When Rhett was researching products and colors, I just gave him a few colors I didn't want.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Basically, I really wanted the siding to be a color that wasn't in the neutral/ tan/ brown arena.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We live in the desert that is already brown and barren and I wanted our house to not blend in with the blah.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rhett's favorite color is black, so I wasn't surprised when he picked the black color swatch.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">CEMENT SIDING: </span></b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><a href="http://www.jameshardie.com/Products">Hardie Board</a> color plus 8" lap siding planks in Iron Gray</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Gable: Staggered Edge Shingle also in Iron Gray</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Trim: Hardie Planks in Arctic White</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We went with the factory processed colored cement siding because the color warranty is for 15 years. Hopefully the color will last longer than that before we need to paint.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Mm8kZhdVpqA/VdXvdPJQ-OI/AAAAAAAARPA/WiFZjhTjoZA/s1600/exterior3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Mm8kZhdVpqA/VdXvdPJQ-OI/AAAAAAAARPA/WiFZjhTjoZA/s640/exterior3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Iron Gray color has a hint of blue, so I think depending on the time of day it looks dark gray or navy blue. I ended up really liking the dark gray Rhett picked. It was different, but not too wild. I can't remember what he wanted to use as the color for trim, but I did insist on white. He was worried it would be too much of a shocking contrast with near-black and bright white trim, but I finally told him to trust me and I'm glad I pushed for the white.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jSPbdqCQ7N8/VdXvfKkS0qI/AAAAAAAARPg/Q5HKZuitjOA/s1600/exterior6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jSPbdqCQ7N8/VdXvfKkS0qI/AAAAAAAARPg/Q5HKZuitjOA/s640/exterior6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the back of the house. There's the basement walk out patio, and the back deck above that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On top are the huge holes for attic windows.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l6jKHUx6qYc/VdXvvWuQ6TI/AAAAAAAARPs/YmqELoibVdk/s1600/exterior9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l6jKHUx6qYc/VdXvvWuQ6TI/AAAAAAAARPs/YmqELoibVdk/s640/exterior9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">ROCK FACADE</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With rock it seemed much more cost effective to go with local distributors, and Rhett picked out a local company that manufactures faux rock.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was more affordable than real stone and saved us on the labor install as well. You also don't have to pour a concrete stone ledge in your foundation to support it like real rock requires.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Harristone Uintah ledgestone. color: Cape Cod</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rhett chose the darkest color scheme that was more gray than brown.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We chose the installers to use the drystack method, where the rocks all touch with no grout.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For our bids, the prices were pretty much the same between drystack or the regular spaces and fill in with grout.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I guess the drystack is more annoying to install, as they had to have more cuts and notch out rocks for a tight fit, but then they were done and didn't have to come back and grout anything.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the style of rock Rhett chose, we liked the horizontal rocks to not have grout spaces.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KXS_wXPhCxc/VdXvfjpNYuI/AAAAAAAARPc/wCRvLN8EM3w/s1600/exterior8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KXS_wXPhCxc/VdXvfjpNYuI/AAAAAAAARPc/wCRvLN8EM3w/s640/exterior8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The crew that installed the rock was really fast and did most at night.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pP1a8R3ZKxk/VdXvefJ26LI/AAAAAAAARPY/rqIt1viivfU/s1600/exterior5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="386" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pP1a8R3ZKxk/VdXvefJ26LI/AAAAAAAARPY/rqIt1viivfU/s640/exterior5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To meet code in our area, they had to caulk all their staple holes, which is what the white dots are on the unfinished areas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-auanP9Hrvrw/VdX3ql6wB3I/AAAAAAAARP8/Dq1i8B3gWWY/s1600/exterior10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-auanP9Hrvrw/VdX3ql6wB3I/AAAAAAAARP8/Dq1i8B3gWWY/s640/exterior10.jpg" width="574" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have a funky front door, and I was really nervous about the rock going around a 5' circle, but they did so great. The rock was pretty much perfect around the curves.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rsd4Y-088vk/VdXvdigX29I/AAAAAAAARPM/DFhZwayb3Po/s1600/exterior4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rsd4Y-088vk/VdXvdigX29I/AAAAAAAARPM/DFhZwayb3Po/s640/exterior4.jpg" width="498" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So that is the exterior.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was a nice phase because we hired the roofing, siding, and rock out so we just sat back and watched it go up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You all know our mom is totally amazing. She made the most colorful and tedious quilt for my Christmas gift, and I have to share it with you! I have 17 chickens and a big garden, so she made me a chicken quilt. She stitched a bunch of different chicken blocks, then put them all together to fit the guest bed in my house. My favorite block is the rooster. She topped the whole thing off with a garden gate border. Each flower is beautifully folded like origami and hand stitched into place. If ALL of that wasn't enough work, she hand quilted the whole thing by herself. The woman has endurance like a terminator.</div>

We have an attic bedroom in our house that has become the guest bedroom. I built a lovely little bed for the space. I decided to make the whole bed slightly shorter than a standard size so that it wouldn't make the attic bedroom look even smaller than it is. It's just a simple platform style. I used grey stain to get that driftwood look that I love. </div>

I recently made six bridesmaid skirts. They were for a wedding party in a different state so I wasn't able to do fittings with any of the ladies. I was happy that that all the sizing turned out right! The skirts were made with a sliver satin under layer and deep purple chiffon top layer. I love the finished look.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have an exciting boxing update. I'm sparring 3 nights a week and I'm working toward my first fight! I'm very excited about it and some days I can hardly believe it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since I've started sparring I have a lot more gear to carry around so I had to make myself a new bag. I had been using a bag that Jessica made in her high school sports sewing class. You can admire her teenage work below:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eI9NW8JcrO8/VHjP0v6LQtI/AAAAAAAAGP0/IzVg_6GHOA0/s1600/024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eI9NW8JcrO8/VHjP0v6LQtI/AAAAAAAAGP0/IzVg_6GHOA0/s1600/024.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the new bag, I just used fabric that I had laying around. There are a lot of pockets to hold the small bits like hand wraps, water, and mouth guards. I made the main body of the bag extra large so I can just chuck everything in it instead of having to tetris shoes and gloves and headgear all the time.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our house has been in the process of being reorganized and remodeled all year. My sewing area was originally in the basement but after all was said and done, it has ended up in my over sized closet. It's a lot less space that I've been accustomed to for the past five years, but I've actually enjoyed being forced to simplify. I downsized to 3 machines and I got rid of two thirds of my fabric which filled an entire car.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The crowning jewel of my new work space is the tailor's bench. My brother Herschel and I designed and built it together. It has storage shelves, a large smooth work area, and a press board on hinges that can easily be lifted out of the way if needed. I decided to build the tailor's bench this way to consolidate space, that way I don't need to have three separate work areas like I used to.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
It's been so stressful these last months and I've cursed more in the that time than in the rest of my entire life put together....but our most recent inspection gauged the house is 50% done so we're getting there! The dream to move in by Christmas is dead, but we knew it wasn't likely in our rural area to have things move as fast as we'd like. </div>

<br />
Rhett and I designed our house in early in 2012. We had a basic drafting software program to plan it all out, then turned it over to an architect to make it official and up to code. Our initial floor plans were for a modest home we intended to later sell. Basically a 3 bed starter house as practice-build. A year later, we were actually starting to get serious about building the thing and what was going to be a starter home changed into our dream/ live in it until we die home. I am so glad we went this track, because building a house is a nightmare and I am glad I will never do it again, and (hopefully) never have to move again.<br />

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fdQ9uOGOxys/VGTazl6GDnI/AAAAAAAAQ2g/XD2LibGM5Vc/s1600/framing3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fdQ9uOGOxys/VGTazl6GDnI/AAAAAAAAQ2g/XD2LibGM5Vc/s640/framing3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So to be here forever, we decided to finish the basement and we redesigned the roof to use previous wasted attic space. Working with the truss designer and our architect, I added side dormers to make head room for stairs. This allowed a 19' wide attic room from the front to the back of the home. Trusses required a crane to set them, luckily it only took one day to plop them all up there.<br />
<br />
View from the front of the house.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P3yB42jbrgo/VGTa1FJx3yI/AAAAAAAAQ24/3DDRc3YDX4U/s1600/framing5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P3yB42jbrgo/VGTa1FJx3yI/AAAAAAAAQ24/3DDRc3YDX4U/s640/framing5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The open hole on top of the house looked weird. One neighbor asked what the airplane hangar was for.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yaUJlfqAjyQ/VGTa1bmdzVI/AAAAAAAAQ28/LYwqJYKQBI0/s1600/framing6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yaUJlfqAjyQ/VGTa1bmdzVI/AAAAAAAAQ28/LYwqJYKQBI0/s640/framing6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This attic is by far my favorite space. Or at least if all my ideas work out, this will be my favorite space...more to come on the plans for up there later.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The attic extended over the back deck, which I was glad because I got more room up there. Rhett wasn't a fan of that change, as the original roof design had a vaulted roof over the deck and now it's regular height. I prefer the normal ceiling to help it hopefully feel like an outdoor living space with more protective roof over it. Mainly I like the idea of being able to hang outdoor curtains to shade the west setting sun or just provide privacy. We'll see how it all pans out.<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mJd9EnLhz9I/VGTa0bdaiKI/AAAAAAAAQ2s/sKXy-ZkJI2c/s1600/framing2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="486" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mJd9EnLhz9I/VGTa0bdaiKI/AAAAAAAAQ2s/sKXy-ZkJI2c/s640/framing2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the little pop out where my <a href="http://www.running-w-scissors.com/2014/07/stained-glass-part-1.html#uds-search-results">stained glass window my mom and I made</a> will go.<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oSWg5gSH2A0/VGTa2Tee1LI/AAAAAAAAQ3I/9FYg332g9H4/s1600/framing7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oSWg5gSH2A0/VGTa2Tee1LI/AAAAAAAAQ3I/9FYg332g9H4/s400/framing7.jpg" width="337" /></a></div>
<br />
In the beginning so much happens. In two weeks we went from a foundation to a house.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ygD2moz1qs0/VGTa3CHR4iI/AAAAAAAAQ3Q/kyt5hhrbnuE/s1600/framing8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="386" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ygD2moz1qs0/VGTa3CHR4iI/AAAAAAAAQ3Q/kyt5hhrbnuE/s640/framing8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One feature I was excited about in my new attic plans was a round window in the center front. It became a really important design element for my vision of the space up there and a theme that bled its way through other areas of my interior designing in the last 9 months of planning. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I always had wondered how they frame in a round or radius window, it was interesting. Basically make a sheeting frame and line it with stud chunks between 2 layers. The window is 3.5' or 42" in diameter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NW4s0lR2AHo/VGTa3OFKJ5I/AAAAAAAAQ3U/jJUoehCaWuo/s1600/framing9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="506" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NW4s0lR2AHo/VGTa3OFKJ5I/AAAAAAAAQ3U/jJUoehCaWuo/s640/framing9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The roof was originally a hip, which means it slopes away from the front. Adding my attic space required a front to back gable, which is basically triangles stacked upright. It changed the architecture of the exterior from what I considered traditional to more Craftsman. Rhett was more on "Team Hipped Roof", but I was "Team Gable". I thought for our floor plan, the gable made the front more interesting to add dimension rather than just a sloping black roof. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a wrinkled page of the original exterior with the hipped roof.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cne0uGHYe7M/VGTlxkMcR0I/AAAAAAAAQ3o/BwK-9sKKyCQ/s1600/originalexterior.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cne0uGHYe7M/VGTlxkMcR0I/AAAAAAAAQ3o/BwK-9sKKyCQ/s640/originalexterior.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I told the architect my plan for the redesign and he was also on Team Hipped Roof, and asked if I was sure on the huge front to back gable at least 3 times. It was the only way to add the huge attic the way I wanted, and yes I was sure. But so far I love the change it gave the whole exterior. I am not bold enough to design anything super crazy, but I like that what we ended up with is somewhat unique. A nephew came over and said: "that round window reminds me of the creepy houses in scary movies" I laughed and thought we definitely need to do something creepy for Halloween down the road...actually I already have a plan my kids will love.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Next the guts, roof, and exterior!<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I02Cjucfjjk/VGTaz-S9egI/AAAAAAAAQ2k/hd8qfvbD_0k/s1600/framing4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I02Cjucfjjk/VGTaz-S9egI/AAAAAAAAQ2k/hd8qfvbD_0k/s640/framing4.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

The projects are categorized by months, and my top is under May.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's the Vernazza Color-Blocked Top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RL65HkWmfXo/VGL1PxmoWSI/AAAAAAAAQ1g/IZ3aH35Q7Kw/s1600/vernazza-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="494" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RL65HkWmfXo/VGL1PxmoWSI/AAAAAAAAQ1g/IZ3aH35Q7Kw/s1600/vernazza-5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The inspiration for the name is from a fishing village in Italy, Vernazza.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="http://savevernazza.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/vernazza8x20-1-1.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's one of five small, amazing coastal village that make up Cinque Terre.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My husband lived in Italy for a few years, and would visit this area. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We didn't go on a honeymoon really when we got married but saved up for a few years and were able to visit Italy for 2 weeks. Cinque Terre was one of my favorite spots.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One afternoon we hiked from the second village to this third Vernazza, it was a warm summer afternoon and a flowy blouse would have been perfect for the occasion and weather.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The structure of the blouse with the vertical color-blocking kind of mimicked the construction of all the buildings smashed together in different colors.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We spent 2 nights in Cinque Terre and one of the magical moments of the trip was falling asleep with the windows open and hearing the sound of the ocean and the jazz band playing at the restaurant below.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So after all that romantic inspiration, hopefully your own version on this design will have a mix of structure, color, and a flowy, drapey fabric that is comfortable and memorable.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
THE FIRST TOP:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
About a year and a half ago I made a this top after I had Izzie.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was excited about the color palate, light blue, champagne, and ivory.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was a simple dolman sleeve top and I color blocked the top and sides.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To cover my bum, I also added a high-low hem.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My original top was made with the wrong side of satin so it was a matte finish, but ended up being really comfortable to wear.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
these are the photos I submitted in the beginning:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fwrfhjva2zU/VFlIUamEUEI/AAAAAAAAQ1E/sqZDFxKmY2E/s1600/patternblock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="582" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fwrfhjva2zU/VFlIUamEUEI/AAAAAAAAQ1E/sqZDFxKmY2E/s1600/patternblock.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I wear this blouse often and really love it in the summer when it's hot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The relaxed fit allows it to stay cool and breezy, and I wear it casually with jeans or throw a skirt on top to dress it up a little.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WQVUn06xCSo/VGL1Q3Xb5VI/AAAAAAAAQ1w/BETSAe_ziro/s1600/vernazza.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WQVUn06xCSo/VGL1Q3Xb5VI/AAAAAAAAQ1w/BETSAe_ziro/s1600/vernazza.jpg" width="448" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was another prototype during the pattern process, using coral, navy and cinnamon.</div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rwazn1y3aSA/VGL1RpKfU_I/AAAAAAAAQ10/Ds2XxAjDBlQ/s1600/vernazza2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="436" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rwazn1y3aSA/VGL1RpKfU_I/AAAAAAAAQ10/Ds2XxAjDBlQ/s1600/vernazza2.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've not had the chance, but I always liked the idea of taking this blouse, adding a skirt to make it a dress. It would look similar to<a href="http://www.running-w-scissors.com/2013/09/10-year-reunion-dress.html#.VGL37fl4qM0"> this dress</a> I made for my 10 year high school reunion, but have the color blocking sides. So many ideas!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jUmj19vjjqQ/UjTXPGKLuMI/AAAAAAAAOuo/fqTszcaxuzg/s400/10yr6.jpg" width="389" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I designed the top in a woven fabric, and the published blouse uses knit, so the project in the book has an added band at the neckline, but the concept of the color blocking is the same.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So if you prefer the comfort and ease of knit, I'd recommend a thinner, slub or tissue knit for the drape effect on the high-low hem.<br />
You could also use the pattern from the book to try it in a woven, and if so <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WU6M7nQFU8">this video</a> may help you hem the neckline so you don't have to have a facing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

It's been exciting to see my concept published in a book, all my work was done last year, so it's cool to see it in real life after all that time!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This year the cool weather came in abruptly, which I couldn't be more pleased about. My boy needed some warmer clothes right away, so I made a bunch of long sleeve shirts and trousers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did raglan sleeves on the shirts with ribbed collars and cuffs which makes the whole construction process take about 10 minutes per shirt. It's so quick because you don't have to interface anything or even set in a sleeve. Every seam is pretty much a straight line so I don't even bother to pin anything either. The trousers have nothing special. No pockets. No faux fly. Just plain trousers with an elastic waist.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used self-drafted patterns. I found the tiger fabric at a thrift store. And the grey thermal and dinosau camo in the clearance bin and our local fabric store for only $1 a yard. Sweet!</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started this rug about six months ago. It turned out to be one of those projects that got me too angry and frustrated so I chucked it against the wall and it sat slumped in a pile all summer long. A few days ago I was about to make myself another pair of jeans, but then I decided I should finish ALL the half-done projects in my studio, so this rug was the first thing I picked up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a heavy wool which made the braid very fat and consequently difficult to work with. The braid kept rolling inward and the rug was turning in to a bowl shape instead of a flat rug. Frustrating right?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I don't know what changed with this second attempt. Maybe I've learned some different tricks on my sewing machine that I'm unaware of. Maybe I've developed some fighter's mental strength and the decision that I WILL WIN. I don't really know, but I got the whole thing stitched together and looking gorgeous in just two hours. HOORAY!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just some fun posts from this summer, getting posted late.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My two nephews got excited about my idea for a Harry Potter Birthday Potter.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Apparently this summer Harry turned 33 on July 31st and we celebrated.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, these boys and I got really excited about throwing a back yard HP party.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fH9KHT7vpa4/VESL7irayoI/AAAAAAAAQyQ/vXwTruYlZA4/s1600/hpbirthday.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="464" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fH9KHT7vpa4/VESL7irayoI/AAAAAAAAQyQ/vXwTruYlZA4/s1600/hpbirthday.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The afternoon was spend with them making Harry's birthday cake.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We came up with lots of ideas, and decided on a Griffyndor scarf cake from cupcakes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had a hard time making burgundy frosting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mitch (12) wrote "Happy 33rd Harry" on the top. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought it was pretty funny.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-odaGC5cv0qQ/VESL8GBvJ3I/AAAAAAAAQyc/N3eI8lRKrVM/s1600/hpbirthday2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-odaGC5cv0qQ/VESL8GBvJ3I/AAAAAAAAQyc/N3eI8lRKrVM/s1600/hpbirthday2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our party wasn't a crazy pinterest party with matching straws or anything, but we did make Butterbeer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It seemed like a pretty good recipe making caramel and then adding it to cream soda.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The highlight was a pinata.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The boys and I made a Dobby pinata from a slashed milk jug and cardboard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My other nephew showed up at the party and found out we'd chosen Dobby as the pinata and cried "Dobby! He saved everyone! We can't bash Dobby!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tried to say how annoying Dobby is...but maybe he does have some merit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h01BoCsMAm0/VESL92pA9WI/AAAAAAAAQy0/V07b0R34ii8/s1600/hpbirthday6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="516" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h01BoCsMAm0/VESL92pA9WI/AAAAAAAAQy0/V07b0R34ii8/s1600/hpbirthday6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Either way, pinatas are always fun and in an interesting twist of fate, no one was strong enough to break the pinata, and so the nephew who defended Dobby is 16 and was the one chosen to finally bust him open.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OsQCSFxzPAY/VESL9OkvjaI/AAAAAAAAQyk/ZvdW29oKoVI/s1600/hpbirthday4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="612" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OsQCSFxzPAY/VESL9OkvjaI/AAAAAAAAQyk/ZvdW29oKoVI/s1600/hpbirthday4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The sun was down when we sang Happy Birthday to Harry with sparklers in the cupcakes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After we watched Harry Potter 4 on the outdoor movie screen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TvETkNI3Y7Y/VESL7eRHvZI/AAAAAAAAQyM/K2SGk2v1CSQ/s1600/hpbirthday3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="392" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TvETkNI3Y7Y/VESL7eRHvZI/AAAAAAAAQyM/K2SGk2v1CSQ/s1600/hpbirthday3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
A few even dressed up!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Luna and Mrs. Malfoy</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xTl2H0Y_z50/VESL9cqFGVI/AAAAAAAAQyo/Edtl178NtG4/s1600/hpbirthday5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="550" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xTl2H0Y_z50/VESL9cqFGVI/AAAAAAAAQyo/Edtl178NtG4/s1600/hpbirthday5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was pretty fun throwing a last minute white trash Harry Potter party, I think we'll be sure to do it again for his 34th next year. </div>

<div>
<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-babTr6sxBRo/UsSWJge53CI/AAAAAAAAPJo/kemF53y-jv4/s1600/jesspost1.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The house moves on.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The framing was important and stressful!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Pn91jpjn99A/VESbpPlx4iI/AAAAAAAAQzs/Q6irOP15zw4/s1600/framin3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Pn91jpjn99A/VESbpPlx4iI/AAAAAAAAQzs/Q6irOP15zw4/s1600/framin3.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We designed the floor plans and had over a year to think about them and mentally walk around in it and so we had some small changes, which the framers didn't like.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was by far the most stressful part so far,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Where the walls and window holes end up is so important, and even things on the plans were framed in wrong,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I realize having the wife as the general contractor is a pain, and then one that cares about losing 3 inches on a wall and noticed is especially annoying.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At one point the framer said "You're killing me! Take this hammer and hit me in the head and just kill me!"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So it's been an adventure fighting for getting things right, and I did feel manly having to deal with it all...everything was how we hoped it would be for the most part and I was glad when it was over!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3Jfq4KhhGY8/VESbK948cjI/AAAAAAAAQzc/xXakIEi5VuQ/s1600/mud4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3Jfq4KhhGY8/VESbK948cjI/AAAAAAAAQzc/xXakIEi5VuQ/s1600/mud4.jpg" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
During framing, we had two huge rain storms that left lots of mud in the basement, and big puddles of mud for the kids.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TQALT5YBHbI/VESbKCYe9TI/AAAAAAAAQzM/AKbrkFNnH2s/s1600/mud2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TQALT5YBHbI/VESbKCYe9TI/AAAAAAAAQzM/AKbrkFNnH2s/s1600/mud2.jpg" height="504" width="640" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We never get this much rain in the desert, and it was frustrating!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I'm learning how to fight.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UxuNrJOi4ag/VDHAYv3FYGI/AAAAAAAAGD4/wG-JGFY9AjU/s1600/box1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UxuNrJOi4ag/VDHAYv3FYGI/AAAAAAAAGD4/wG-JGFY9AjU/s1600/box1.jpg" width="462" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Until ten weeks ago, I had never set foot in any type of gym and the last time I tried any type of sport, I was in the tenth grade and it went horribly. So, it has been a very long journey for me to build up the courage to box with the men, and the decision has changed everything for me. I'm in love.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the first few weeks of boxing I was wearing cut off pajama pants, my brother's T-shirts and bare feet. I went to a few different stores hoping to find something better, but in the world of women's active wear, you can find skin tight yoga pants or teeny tiny running shorts. I couldn't feel comfortable in either style, so I decided to make my own clothes for boxing. I got some heavyweight black sports knit at my local fabric store and I was able to make 3 pairs of shorts, 1 pair of pants, and I'm currently working on a jacket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since I was taking the time to make all of it, I decided to add some personalized fighters' details. A lot of fighters have some type of symbol on their clothing. For example, Jim Braddock wore a clover in honor of his Irish blood. Dmitriy Salita is a Jewish fighter and proudly wears the Star of David. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c8i_h61C7-A/VA9vczcL6nI/AAAAAAAAGCw/56CaNf0SCic/s1600/boxer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c8i_h61C7-A/VA9vczcL6nI/AAAAAAAAGCw/56CaNf0SCic/s1600/boxer.jpg" width="170" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-49qmNaFxk_g/VA9venysrdI/AAAAAAAAGC4/0WwtYcTzB1I/s1600/salita001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="299" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-49qmNaFxk_g/VA9venysrdI/AAAAAAAAGC4/0WwtYcTzB1I/s1600/salita001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For my symbol I've chosen the sickle and hammer because my greatest inspiration to become a strong person are the female Russian fighters from WWII. They were as strong as the men, they fought with the men, and some day I hope I have as much mental and physical strength as they did.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DU-ifhGEO0Y/VBES36izffI/AAAAAAAAGDI/710DNdgHUiY/s1600/fighters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DU-ifhGEO0Y/VBES36izffI/AAAAAAAAGDI/710DNdgHUiY/s1600/fighters.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I like having the sickle and hammer in shimmering gold because when my body is approaching the breaking point and my head starts to fall, it is the first thing I see and it reminds me of my goals and it ignites my determination to keep hitting. It reminds me that there have been women who have survived wars, raised families, and become truly strong and I believe I can do it too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e8bBolehGso/VDHAt_eMvDI/AAAAAAAAGEA/qgS6kcfM_CE/s1600/box.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e8bBolehGso/VDHAt_eMvDI/AAAAAAAAGEA/qgS6kcfM_CE/s1600/box.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
So, here are the shorts and pants. There isn't anything particularly special about them, they're just the exact fit that I like: high waisted, semi-slim leg, and the length a little above the knee. I'm going to start sparring any day now and if I make it to a real fight I have a beautiful idea in mind for a robe. Wish me luck!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The biggest project I've ever taken on, is building the home we plan to live in until we die.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Luckily, Rhett and I have done everything together, so this house has kind of become another member of our family.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ArL4koXlHwI/VBkT_n7TJ0I/AAAAAAAAQvg/wKPmRCHMNqs/s1600/familysept.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ArL4koXlHwI/VBkT_n7TJ0I/AAAAAAAAQvg/wKPmRCHMNqs/s1600/familysept.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
"We're building our own home" can mean a lot of things.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On one end, there are those who literally build everything themselves, nail every 2x4, and in the end they're home is completely constructed from their themselves, friends and family. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are not that talented.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
On the other end are those who hire a general contractor, designer, and supervise and make all the decisions on their home build.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are cheap and trying to save money.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are in the middle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are hiring all the structural subs and plan to do a lot of the finish work ourselves once it has sheetrock.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've learned a lot about construction so far and have been grateful for a lot of verbal abuse as a teenager dancing intense ballet that gave me thick skin. Construction is a stressful business and I've found each sub wants to do his individual part his way, not thinking ahead for the other subs who will follow behind. But I have the whole house in mind, down to every inch and so there were some arguments and I felt really manly disagreeing about how to cure concrete on the job site.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But so far most things are how we wanted/ designed/ envisioned.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I realize we are a horrible client to build for.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We designed the house and have been planning every inch for almost 2 years, so we notice when a wall is 4" out of place, or I have a plan for this space so no you can't frame it flush with the other wall for your convenience.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I guess that is why we decided to be our own General Contractor. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We're too invested and care too much about lots of details I guess.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Things are moving along, faster than I expected. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our goal was to dry in or have it waterproof before snow, and move in before Christmas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not sure if moving in will be reality, but I guess it's a nice goal.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
SO...the concrete work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Rhett really wanted to pour 9' basement walls.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought it would be nice to have a taller basement, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It wasn't that much more to pour the extra foot of wall, so we went with it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Watching the crew do the concrete work made me impressed anyone does this on their own.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Looked exhausting and I was glad to hire it out.</div>
