Our house doesn't have an ideal place for starting sprouts. The whole south side is shaded by a large covered porch, so the sprouting attempts I've made haven't been very successful. To get my garden started this spring, I decided to bring in the help of a plant light. One morning while my boy slept, I hacked this little sprouting bench together. I used 2 x 4 scraps that I found laying around the garage. I found simple screw-in hooks in a bin that were just perfect for hanging the light. I just used a cheap regular shop light with a plant light bulb. The best part about the bench is that I can keep it in the basement so my boy can't stick his fingers in the dirt and kill sprouts. (That's what happened with my last batch). Eventually, I'd like to add a counter top to the bench for some added work space.
I planted four varieties of tomatoes, five varieties of peppers, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, onions and about twenty different herbs. I'm so excited for the garden!
So glad to see signs of spring on the way. Excited to get my garden going as well.
ReplyDeleteOh very cool! I like the idea of starting the seedlings indoors. And since our growing season is pretty short, it's good to get a head start!
