Collared Dress

I love high necklines. I always have. Unfortunately, they have never looked good on me though, because of my extra busty figure. If I wear a neckline that is too high, my bust looks as big as an upholstered sofa. I had this design in my head for a while, knowing that it wouldn't look good on me, but I still wanted to make it. So, fortunately I've got a darling petite friend (NIcki) that the dress looks wonderful on.

The dress has a darted neckline and raglan sleeves which makes a charming radiating shape at the neck. I did a vintage-style pop over collar. It's cut on the bias and slightly smaller that the neck opening, so that when it gets eased into place, it actually stands up and rolls over.  It's a simple dress in plain charcoal so it's easy to pair with just about anything. I need a dress like this in my wardrobe. I just need to come up with a neckline that is just as interesting, but accommodating for the big bust.

  1. Oh my word, I love it! Have you ever thought about designing patterns? I would love a pattern for this dress and also for the jeans you made for Nicki.

    1. I've considered patterns, but I'm not very good at explaining each step so that it's understandable for other people. If all people needed was the pattern pieces and no instructions I'd probably be making patterns for other people all day.

    2. You could write them in the style of Burda and keep the text super-super vague, or just do like the Japanese patterns and have little numbers on the corners where you sew together and have just illustrations. ;) But, I know what you mean, as I write patterns for hand-knitters and pattern/technical writing has its own conventions...There's got to be folks out there with the experience to write the accompanying text for sewing patterns, no?

  4. That is super beautiful! Us chesty women couldn't wear that one, but your friend wears it so well!

  5. Ooh, I really love that neckline and collar combination. Makes me wish that I was less chesty too.

  7. Love this dress! Reminds me somewhat of the Oliver + S school photo dress, but that's for kids. It looks awesome here as a lady pattern, though!
