Pointe Shoes

5:06 PM

Thanks for all the inquiries for good homes for these shoes, but I was able to place all that I was giving away, so unfortunately I have no more to give. Thanks!
__________________________________________________________
I think I've mentioned on here that I used to dance.  Well I kept every pair of pointe shoes.  They've sat all together in a huge basket in my mom's living room for the last decade.  I quit ballet due to hip injuries when I was 16, actually it was ten years ago next month.
If you want the whole scoop on that: MY BALLET STORY

So I'm sure most people are wondering why I would hoard a lot of old, sweaty, worn, trashed, in some cases blood stained shoes.

Well I think pointe shoes are special to all little girls, and of course getting my first pair was a day I looked forward to as a little girl for a long time.  So they're magical, but I'm old now so what's the deal?

But I actually did a really good job of documenting my years of ballet in the shoes.  Each pair I wrote the date I last wore them, and in some cases, the ballets I danced wearing them.

This pair was from a ballet called Legend of Timpanogos, it's a Native American love story, so we'd dye the shoes to look like darker skin.

Or this pair I had written "first shoes sewn by me".  There's actually a lot that went into pointe shoes before I ever wore them, darning the toe so they wouldn't shred, hacking the heel off the shank, pouring superglue in the toe to prolong the wear, squashing the box wider, burning the ends of the ribbons, and sewing on the elastic and ribbons.  I guess my mom had sewn them all until this pair.

So I finally got the garbage bag of shoes out to decide what I was going to do with them.  They are important to me, but to be realistic, I haven't looked at them pretty much for the last 10 years, and I don't have room to store them all for memories sake to look at them in another decade.
I've been trying to think of some cool idea to use them rather than just throw them in the trash.

Here are a few of the ideas I found:

someone made a weird art sculpture {photo source}

you can actually buy frilly pointe shoe art here

But ballet isn't my life anymore, so I don't see a pair of artistic pointe shoes on a pedestal anywhere in my house working or fitting really.  But this poster is the only idea I've really had, other than storing them in a box in the garage.

{ poster source}

I've thought about building a crate and filling it with my most important pairs, then just putting it in a bookcase or something like a weird accessory.  Even though my decor obviously doesn't have a dance theme or anything, it's a part of my life, and something interesting to display.  But I don't know, if you have any ideas what I could do with these I'd appreciate the brainstorm!

Some mom's of dancers had pointe shoe wreaths, but I'm not really a wreath person.  But a cool idea.

So at this point I went through them all and decided which ones were really important to me, as I can't imagine thinking of anything where I could use all of these.

As I was sorting, I found the last pair I ever wore,  to perform for the last time--George Balanchine's Serenade.  It was my favorite ballet I've ever danced.
You can watch the opening moments here, from Pacific Northwest Ballet.  (even if you think ballet is lame, this music is beautiful...I think)
Or more clips from throughout ballet here if you care (from a Portugal ballet company)

Anyway, I put them on, and even remembered how to tie the ribbons.

Then I stood up and, like an idiot, went on pointe a little and immediately my arches and calves started cramping, so I took them right off before I hurt myself.
My little guy had been diving into the pile as I was sorting, and when I put them on, I think he realized they were shoes for the first time and he busted out laughing.  I think the square toes seemed really funny to him.

This is the correct way to store them, with the ribbons nicely wound around the shank.  I was faithful in keeping my first few pairs nice because I was 12 and they were so precious, I even stored them in a satin bag.  Then as you go, the magic wears off, and I'd tie them to my backpack so the sweat could dry to wear them the next day.  Man we stunk up the carpool a lot, our poor moms that would have to drive us and our stinky feet home.

Anyway, I ended up "saving" the pairs that had specific performances/ ballets written on them, and my first ten pairs, and my last pair.

So I have a box to keep, which is still a lot more than I probably should, and a box that worst case scenario will go in the trash unless I can think of something cool to do with them.  Too bad I can't think of a way to make money off them.
Any artists out there that need a box of used pointe shoes for a cool sculpture?  I'd much rather see them immortalized as a piece of art rather than decompose in the land fill, but I'm a sentimental pack rat who needs to get a grip, and even though I still have all of them in my kitchen, a baby step is still progress.

So feed me your ideas, if they were clothes I could just make a quilt.

  2. I took ballet since I was 3, but sadly quit just before I got to 'pointes.' Yes I've regretted it ever since. So I know how special those shoes are to you.
I've always wanted a pair, even just to hang up to remind me of how I felt when I did dance.
If you can't find a use for all of them, I'd pay for you to ship me up a pair up ;)
Oh and be sure to save a real special pair for your daughter to have someday!

  3. This post made me teary eyed. I think that you should keep them! Your daughter will love to look at them one day. I am not usually a sentimental pack rat, but these seem special.

  4. Im not a pack rat at all and I tend to throw everything away but these are beautiful and you should keep them! I feel like they should be put in a big giant glass vase or something!

  5. How about making a large specimen board. Paint the rustic board a color and put one of each pair on it in rows... Then hang it up. I think if you've saved them this long then you should display them. Even if you hang them in the basement you will still have them.

  8. What a lovely story! I don't know what to do with them b/c I'm too sentimental, too, but if you do get rid of them, take a picture of each one (so you can see which performances they are from) and make one of those collage pictures you can make on snapfish or wherever! Then you could frame it and have it always!

  9. Is there anyway that you could cut off the sole of the shoe, maybe make a cork board of sorts, that has the stuff you wrote on it and use the ribbons as a frame or something?

I also like the idea of a big glass jar...that could look so neat.

    Shoe scrap book? :)

Good luck, whatever you decide. I'll be back to read your ballet story soon!

  10. Have you seen this magazine? http://www.stampington.com/html/handcrafted_volume5.html

Somewhere I have a copy and cannot locate it but I remember the first time I saw this cover, I fell in serious love with pointe slippers! And I'm definitely NOT a dancer. The article in the mag tells how a mother beaded and be-ribboned her daughter's old slippers. There was also a picture of her daughter standing on pointe after she finished embellishing them. Gorgeous!!!

I hope you figure out something to do with all your slippers - they're lovely just as they are.

  11. I recently saw an article where someone had taken apart old baseballs and made the leather into flowers. They were beautiful and tne aging made them more beautiful. I saw it somewhere in blogland. I was thinking that you could pry the leather sole off of your shoes and make something out of them.

I do have to say that when you line them up they look really pretty. I have a dressing area in my walk-in closet and I have a chair in there. Over my dresser area is a place for me to display stuff that is sentimental to me. I put things that are very meaningful and I think if you had a board (not very large) you could mount the shoes and hang them. I was thinking like maybe 1 1/2 by 36 -48". It would be a soul refresher while you are dressing.

Good Luck. Don't throw them away until you are ready.

  12. You could put your last pair in a shadow box with a picture of you dancing in them. If you have a ticket stub from that performance it could go in there as well.

In fact, you could pack a shadow box the way you packed them in that regular box.

Another idea would be to arrange them in some of those cool ways like the statues but then take pictures of them. You could then do a scrapbook or gallery wall with the really artsy photos of them.

I really hope you find a cool way to preserve your memories!

  13. Oh, how jealous am I of your ballet shoes! I always wanted to learn, but never could dance that precisely. I have saved my modern dance shoes, tap shoes, jazz shoes and drill team shoes for these same reasons. I would say to create a huge shadow box with each pair almost smooshed together (similar to the poster)but love the way you displayed the soles. Would be a perfect game room, craft room, bedroom or large closet piece of art. My mom took ballet for years and I ADORE her old leotards an tutus. Such an important part of who you are should be displayed proudly!! Ballet shoes are just beautiful to look at - the epitome of grace and pain all at once! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I third the shadow box idea -- shove them in and hang them up, with the most important sole messages showing through the glass.

I stopped dancing before I was old enough for pointe, and I still wish I could have had the chance...

  15. Your photos posted here are art. I would print the photos out (maybe on canvas) and make a 3D photo collage, slightly overlapping some of the pictures. You could probably save one or two pairs of actual shoes to integrate into the design.

  16. I started ballet again as a 35 year old, after a few classes as a 7 year old. I was pregnant with my 3rd child, and was amazed at how different everything felt when I resumed classes after delivery, my center of gravity was all different! I'm a heavy girl, and have too much respect for my foot bones to consider going on pointe at my current weight, but have thought about buying shoes on ebay as a reward for weight loss...
I'd love a pair, if for no other purpose than to show my daughters how much the structure of a shoe contributes to dancing on pointe. I can imagine cutting one in half length wise, to reveal the structure, an anatomy of a pointe shoe.
Ballet shoes are just so beautiful! I really want to dance on my toes one day...

    ReplyDelete
  17. if it were me i would take that photo of the 10 pairs and frame it for display (possibly with a couple of photos from your performances) and then let them all go. if you know you will not look at them and woudl even give them away i would just enjoy the lovely photos you included here. (but i am someone who let go of her wedding dress immediately and just kept the veil - which my girls use regularly for pretend play as it lives with their dress up clothes)

  18. WOW. I can't believe there are so many!! What a lovely thing to keep and document. No ideas as to what to do with them though. I was in ballet when I was 4, but then my family moved to a teeny tiny town where there was no such thing as dance. I continued to walk on my toes, though, until I was 9. My toes are stunted and shot now because of it, my middle toe smaller than all the others. :(

  20. I am such a pack rat and totally feel your pain. Knowing that I am a pack rat, I cannot, in good faith, give you any great advice. However, I LOVE the idea of procuring one of those tall glass vases from IKEA and filling it up as an art display piece. Ballet may not be a big part of your life anymore, but it was and it did help shape you into who you are today. I would definitely keep the special pairs boxed and put away for posterity or put them in a really neat custom made shadow box. But I would totally go to town on displaying the others and experimenting. It might be kind of neat to cut the toes out and attach them to a board to hang up for display. The toe would face out and be attached flat...like making a quilt without stitching them together. Or maybe you could cut the toes out and attach them with space around them and label each pair of toes? Or maybe you could do toes and cut squares of the satin out to make a sort of collage? I am not really getting my ideas to you clearly...but I suddenly have a lot of them.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i didn't have the opportunity to dance when i was a girl, but my daughters did. i remember stitching the toes, around and around i stitched. i think a few years later, mole skin was introduced and just needed stitching around the edge! i had to stitch a 'chain stitch' around and around starting at the middle. And many recitals! late nights, shows, designing costumes! great memories with my girls. LOL but i would suggest that you keep a special pair or 2, shadow box them with a picture of you dancing in the background, doesn't have to be a large frame. and with the others...why do you not find an 'innercity dance school' and donate shoes, that still have some wear, for those dancers in need so they have the opportunity to experience pointe shoes and are able to create such wonderful memories such as you and many others have shared with us.

    Just a thought
    Jane

  22. I think you should take the last and first pairs that you danced in and make a piece of art with them for your daughters room. Something with the wording "I hope you Dance" like the song. This would be a wonderful keepsake for her and you. I envision it as something that can hang above her bedroom door or closet door with the shoes tied on each side.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have a box full of point shoes too, so I am loving all the suggestions. Unfortunately mine are not as well documented, that was great thinking!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Your photos are fantastic. Truly. And they take up very little space :) Whatever you decide to do with the ones you keep, the ones that you are ready to let go you should list on ebay. I know it sounds weird, but I read it blogland a long time ago about a woman who sold hundreds of shoes in less than a week on ebay. And I don't remember anything else about the story, or how much she made or anything like that. But I was shocked that someone was buying old, trashed, sweat and blood stained shoes. Amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I second the cork board idea. Use just the soles you've written on as a collage on a painted board and line the edge with the ribbons, maybe weaved?, so you can still remember the shoes and the performances (and if you only did one sole per pair you could use them all!). But I also liked the idea of a tall glass and shoving them in there, I'm sure whatever you do it'll be gorgeous, it always is!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't have any good ideas for you but I think the shoes are beautiful and I am so glad that you are keeping some of them. I can't wait to see what you will do with them!

    ReplyDelete
  27. What about redying/painting them and putting them together as a mobile or wall hanging (similar to a drying bouquet) for your daughter's room? Or maybe putting them all together on a board with the toes down so each toe becomes a mini cubby for small stuffed animals or trinkets. My aunt did this with some of her high heels as they broke and would keep markers, pens, paperclips, jewelry pouches, etcetera in the toes.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Perhaps you can make a few shadow boxes. Or even just one with the shoes from your final performance. The shoes, a photo of the performance, a program, sparkly hair clip, or something. Just one sweet memory to sum up that part of your history.(BTW, I loved your ballet story.)

    ReplyDelete
  29. how cool that you have saved them all these years and even cooler that you documented when you danced in them on the soles.

I say narrow it down to a handful that really have meaning to you and photograph them. I even love the photograph of you wearing it on point above. Then, maybe sell them on ebay...or see if Miss Mustard Seed could sell them at her antique shop in VA. She would love to have some well loved ballet shoes to sell. I bet she could put them in an awesome vignette.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I wish I could come up with a brilliant idea for these shoes. Shadow box a few of the special pair? Or maybe if you have your very first ballet slippers framed next to your last pair of pointe to show the size difference and hang that in a little girls' room? I have my first walking shoes framed next to my daughters first walking shoes. Sentimental and lovely to look at. Maybe one day you have a famous ballerina as a granddaughter and oh how she would love a keepsake.

p.s. I second the Miss Mustard Seed. She would probably buy some.

  36. Make a sculpture of a ballerina out of the shoes. Like, hot glue them all together to make the shape, cut the box off of one and use it as the bun, put them altogether in a frill for the tutu, use the ribbons as hair...Idk it would probably look stupid but as an artist, thats what I would do.

  48. JeSSICA!!!! Do you still have your extra pointe shoes!!!! Oh my goodness this is so crazy! My name is Chanel Smith, not sure if you remember me but I use to dance with you a long long time ago. I was in Lynette's ballet class and Lynette and I were best friends in ballet!! Please tell her hello for me. I don't know where she is at these days.
You were always someone who inspired me in dance class. And heck, you still have the perfect ballet feet. You and Lynette, I swear.
So the crazy part about all this is this summer I was looking through all my storage that I have tucked away for years and I opened two boxes filled with my old pointe shoes. I did the same thing as you. I had marked my pointe shoes with the performances I wore them for and I also have some that I had my friends in ballet sign. I was sitting there and wondered "what do I do with all these?" I haven't opened the boxes since I left for college. Finally sitting there in the pile of stinky satin and cardboard I came up with idea of what to do with them. I'm keeping it a secret for now, but this March or May I will be unveiling my artistic concoction as part of my gallery salon showing in Lexington, Virginia. Ballet is still a large part of my life and I am currently an Artist in Residence with a dance company here in Lexington called The Community Dance Connection Theatre (The CDCT).
Anyway what lead me to your blog is I wanted to see what other people had done with their old pointe shoes. And Holy Cow I was so excited to find You! I hope all is so well for you and wish you the very best! If you do have any extras I'd love to create an exchange with you. email me at chanel@balletvision.com.

Lots of love to you and your family!

  53. I hope you haven't thrown them out yet. I just came across this and wanted to comment. I have always loved ballet but couldn't afford it and simply wasn't built for it even if money wasn't an issue. I am encouraging my youngest to stay with ballet so that she may have the chance one day to be on pointe. You could place them side by side in a large shadow box. You can find them at craft stores. Or simply affix them to a large board that you display as a wall sculpture of sorts. Allow the strings to hang as they will. Ballet oriented things may not be your current decorating style but the dance is in your blood.

  55. Oh my goodness. I am only sixteen and have actually only just started dancing on pointe this year (very late to start, I know). It's so beautiful seeing all these pictures and how important the pointe shoes were to you. I hope at some point I can reach that stage. For my senior Visual Art piece, I wanted to explore how dancing revealed the true essence of my character, and my idea was to do a series of photographs of pointe shoes as well as decorate/revamp/recontextualise them. I wish I could've taken some of those other pointe shoes off your hands, as I'm having difficulty finding dead, broken or worn out pointe shoes that people are ready to biff. Would you know anyone who might have any I could take off their hands? Thank you

And recently I wanted to start decorating pointe shoes, because I never actually got my own pair. :(. So far I only found one person willing to give me a pair, but I cant get them until this fall. If you have any left to spare, even if just a pair I would be immensely grateful. 57. Hi, I am also a dancer, although I just started pointe. I assume you still dance and probably have more dead shoes now. I am looking for pointe shoes to decorate. I've tried everywhere:my studio, all the dance shops around, the internet, and nobody has agreed to give me old pointe shoes . I am really artistic and crafty and would love to make some kind of a deal with you. For example, if you give me two pairs, I'll decorate both and send one back, so you can have it. That way it could be fair. Please please contact me if you're interested. My email is snoiecfan@live.com

  58. HI there Jessica!
Oh wow...your story is absolutely beautiful! I just get goose bumps when I hear such a passionate story such as yours. I love all your pointe shoes...just something about the shabby look, the energy that went into each and every pair...they are timeless. I have been looking for any antique or vintage pairs of Pointe slippers that I can find, as I use them for making shadow box displays and some pieces that are used to display with angel wings. I think you will find the passion within to use these for something fabulous...but if you are ever interested in selling any of the pairs you have left, I would be delighted to purchase any of them that you could let go of. If you don't have many left to give up...maybe you know of someone or place that I could find some reasonably priced for my projects. I would appreciate it very much! Thank you for posting this fabulous and most touching post of your life as a ballerina....it really touched my heart! I can be reached by email at KarenKettelpfs@gmail.com. Thank you!!

How about writing a children's story about your shoes and how they felt as they danced to the music. Your photographs could be pictures of the actual shoes with a collage of pictures of you dancing, or music sheets of the music in the background. It would be fun to write.

I would like to decorate the room the girls stay in when they are visiting us and pointe shoes decorating the room would be perfect!!! Are you interested in selling some?

  62. I would love to have a pair or two! Two of my friends still take pointe and they sometimes give me their shoes to decorate. I like to bedazzle and restore the pointe shoes and make them beautiful again. :) if you have some left I would love to take some!
