Ballard Design Knockoff Decor Planter Crate

6:22 PM

I kind of got side tracked, when I should be making a few Christmas gifts.
But this was a quick little project.

I found this wooden box for $1.00 at the thrift store.

For a while it served as a bed for Woody.

It reminded me of this decor planter crate from Ballard Designs
I actually think the thrift box may actually be a planter box, it has a hole in the bottom.

After I washed the box with warm, soapy water I let it dry.
I decided I didn't like the natural color of the wood, so I stained it with cherry Minwax stain.
It just darkened it a bit.

Then I added the handles on the ends.  I found clearance drawer pulls at Lowe's for $2.00
To add the hardware, I just measured the hole distance, drilled the holes, and screwed the handles on.

Then I painted the text on the side.
I just use masking tape to block off the area to help keep the letters straight and to give the tops and bottoms a nice straight finish.  It lets me be sloppy.
So now I don't know what to put in it.  It's not very big, probably 4-5" deep.
I know it's probably stupid to make something without a definite plan, but I did.
I've thought about the fake bulbs or plants, but I don't know.  It will most likely go on a console table.

So I need your help or ideas.
ANY IDEAS WHAT TO PUT IN THIS?

  2. what wouldn't I put in there...from the pictures it looks wide enough for file folders for the office or turn it -- can it hold DVD's or CD's? Or sewing patterns! Ummm what else...I like the planting of something in it. Maybe wheat grass -- easy to grow and so green! I need easy to grow. No green thumb for me. :(

  4. It could hold wallets, mail, keys, phones, etc., by the door to grab on your way out of the house. Great project - I love it. :)

  8. I have a wooden box about this size on the back of the toilet tank. It has a few new hand towels rolled up, that do NOT get used. Also I have some floral picks I stuck. It just gives a little color to the bathroom.

Love what you did with it!!
