Ballard Design Knockoff Decor Planter Crate

6:22 PM

I kind of got side tracked, when I should be making a few Christmas gifts.
But this was a quick little project.

I found this wooden box for $1.00 at the thrift store.

For a while it served as a bed for Woody.

It reminded me of this decor planter crate from Ballard Designs
I actually think the thrift box may actually be a planter box, it has a hole in the bottom.

After I washed the box with warm, soapy water I let it dry.
I decided I didn't like the natural color of the wood, so I stained it with cherry Minwax stain.
It just darkened it a bit.

Then I added the handles on the ends.  I found clearance drawer pulls at Lowe's for $2.00
To add the hardware, I just measured the hole distance, drilled the holes, and screwed the handles on.

Then I painted the text on the side.
I just use masking tape to block off the area to help keep the letters straight and to give the tops and bottoms a nice straight finish.  It lets me be sloppy.
So now I don't know what to put in it.  It's not very big, probably 4-5" deep.
I know it's probably stupid to make something without a definite plan, but I did.
I've thought about the fake bulbs or plants, but I don't know.  It will most likely go on a console table.

So I need your help or ideas.

  1. maybe the remotes for your electronics in your family area, or find some way to put pasta or boxes of pasta in there. or if you have a wine bar put the cork screws and other wine tools in it.

  2. what wouldn't I put in there...from the pictures it looks wide enough for file folders for the office or turn it -- can it hold DVD's or CD's? Or sewing patterns! Ummm what else...I like the planting of something in it. Maybe wheat grass -- easy to grow and so green! I need easy to grow. No green thumb for me. :(

  3. CDs? DVDs? All that junk in the junk drawer that always seems to multiply in the dark?!

    Awesome box and project.

  4. It could hold wallets, mail, keys, phones, etc., by the door to grab on your way out of the house. Great project - I love it. :)

  5. So cute! I like the planter idea with fake bulbs...or line it and plant an indoor herb garden!

  6. Candy. Hands down the best idea ever. :o) But I'd probably have to put remote's in there, ours are all over and it drives me crazy!

  7. I love your blog! I don't even remember how I found you. I just went through a lot of it on and off today and you are so creative! I love that you can paint. Your Christmas decor is incredible.

  8. I have a wooden box about this size on the back of the toilet tank. It has a few new hand towels rolled up, that do NOT get used. Also I have some floral picks I stuck. It just gives a little color to the bathroom.

Love what you did with it!!

  9. Herbs. Assuming there's enough light there.

  10. Run your cords through the hole in the bottom and charge your ipods/camera in it.

  11. Wine bottles with cool labels.

Thank you for stopping by, we love to hear from you!
