Nativity: Mom Feature

1:07 AM

My mom made this awesome nativity scene for all her girls, my grandma, one for herself, and I think 2 more that were commissioned.
Each character is a stuffed softie, and about 12" tall.
So much work went into this I thought I'd just take a minute to show you.
Because each character is 12" tall, some even taller, it is kind of a big nativity.  It barely fits on my console table, but so far it works.
Trees and animals below:

I thought I'd start out with the stable type animals and palm trees.
The tallest tree is at least 2 feet tall.  They're made out of fleece and have metal bb's in the bottom to weight them down to stand up.

This first guy is the donkey.  All the bodies are stuffed with polyfil and the legs have wire in them to help support the bodies.  All these eyes were hand sewn.
I'm pretty sure this donkey came from a pattern.  I'll ask my mom if she has the info.

I know the cow was my mom's original design.  She kept adjusting to get the proportions right on the legs for the cow to be laying down.  Also made out of fleece and stuffed with polyfil.

So that's the beginning of my mom's nativity...more to come!

  4. My mom has this exact same nativity, sans cow of course. My cousin designed the pattern, and she used to teach classes and sell kits to people. She doesn't have a commercially available pattern, but I told her a few weeks ago that she TOTALLY needs to make them available. Like, right now.

  5. Oh Jessica this is a treat. I loved playing with our "Christmas Crib", a name my family called the Nativity set. My father built it and it was alway fascinating to me. I can just see children playing with this set. Your mother is gifted and I know that you must treasure it.

Thank you for sharing this with us.
